Deliece Blanchard

Painting needs to be fun.
Deliece Blanchard paints landscapes, with lyrical and rhythmic marks that reveal her background in music. Her plein air and studio paintings are colorfully impressionistic, and frequently depict her favorite environment, the Blue Ridge Mountains. A cellist, as well as a painter, Deliece has degrees in biology and music from the University of Virginia. Painting en plein air and being outside "with a purpose," make her feel like a fellow creature on the earth.
Deliece has been juried into 4 American Impressionist Society shows and 2 Oil Painters of America shows. She has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst Va. Her work has appeared in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. To learn more about her, check out her resume, statement, and awards below.

Painting makes me happy like nothing else. Just mixing paint on the palette is fascinating and worthwhile. John Ruskin said that one should be no more proud, nor defensive, nor anguished when making art, than a robin building a nest. It should come naturally and be practiced by all humans. I agree and I feel the most natural when I am painting! I also feel the most challenged, which keeps me striving.
My paintings are organized works of reticulation, repetition, stripes, tremolos, and patches – like the handsome markings of a pickerel frog, or the doubled sixteenth notes of the violins in Mendelssohn’s string symphonies, or the repeats of William Morris’ textile designs. Rhythmic patterns attract and trigger a yearning within me. My intention is for my paintings to show a dynamic relationship between spatial depth and surface pattern. It is the process of mark making that brings this ineffable attraction into focus. The act of painting shows me something I can’t find through intellectual searching. The essential thing is to work hard and follow the yearning.
